Short Duration/Mobile Work Zone Training

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has requested that the Kentucky Transportation Center, Technology Transfer Program develop a course to assist companies and government agencies with guidance on short duration and mobile work zones. With guidance from the Cabinet, the Technology Transfer has developed this course.


The purpose of the Short Duration/Mobile Work Zone Training is to provide guidance on short duration and mobile activities while maintaining proper traffic control when performing right-of-way mowing, litter pickup, tree trimming, and spraying operations in accordance with MUTCD and KYTC standards. The course will focus on temporary traffic control for short duration and mobile work zones as it pertains to the basic principles of standard traffic control devices used in work areas, guidelines for applications of devices, and typical application diagrams.

 

Short Duration/Mobile Work Zone Participants must be qualified through training every five years. All participant rosters are provided to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.

Dates & Locations

Week long. Six hours of online, independent training completed in Canvas. Participants can register at anytime during the week but must complete the course by 5 p.m. Friday of the same week. If the course work is not completed within the week, the participant will be considered a No Show and forfeit the course.

Agenda

The course materials will focus on the following materials:

  • Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD)
  • KY Standard Specifications
  • KY Standard Drawings
  • Guidelines for Traffic Control in Short Duration Mobile Work Zone


Topics discussed include: why temporary traffic control is important; the minimum guidelines for installing short term stationary, short duration, and mobile work zones; the KYTC requirements for short term stationary, short duration, and mobile work zones; additional requirements for mowing, litter pickup, tree trimming, and spraying operations; and liability. The concepts will be taught using a combination of lecture, interactive discussion, video, and group activities.


This course is in addition to the Work Zone Traffic Control Technician and/or Work Zone Traffic Control Supervisor. Basic Work Zone and Flagger training is also available.

Fees

  • $145 per participant

NOTE: Payment is required in advance, except employees of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.
