Superpave Plant Technologist, New Personnel

Requirements    Available Training Dates & Locations    Registration

The Kentucky Asphalt Qualification Program soon will begin its eighth season of technologist training and qualification. This program is a three-way partnership of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, the Plantmix Asphalt Industry of Kentucky, and the Kentucky Transportation Center. The purpose of the program is to develop and maintain a pool of well-trained specialists for designing and managing hot-mix asphalt (HMA).

Kentucky specifications and Federal mandates require qualified technologists on all HMA projects. Individuals who have never been previously qualified as an SPT must register for the 3.5- day SPT class.  Please note that this training course is not meant for novices; experience and knowledge of basic HMA concepts and testing procedures is highly recommended.  Anyone seeking an SMDT qualifications must hold, or be registered for, the prerequisite SPT qualification.

Requirements
Prior to enrolling in the Superpave Plant Technologist (SPT) or Superpave Mix Design Technologist (SMDT) qualification course, you should have a basic understanding of the methods and concepts involved.  These courses are not for novices in this field. These classes are not intended to introduce or teach basic hot-mix asphalt (HMA) or Superpave principles. Instead, they are intended to review Kentucky procedures, familiarize experienced technologists with some important new practices, and provide an overview of the information used on a daily basis in HMA testing.

SPT
An SPT will be qualified to perform daily inspection, process-control, and acceptance or verification testing as defined in the Standard Specifications.

Prerequisites
The individual should be familiar with the fundamentals of the operation of asphalt mixing plants, basic process-control tests and inspection duties, acceptance testing of asphalt mixtures, and all related calculations. The individual should also be familiar with the associated testing equipment, including the devices used for asphalt binder content determination, wet-sieve analysis, gyratory compaction, and maximum specific gravity determination.
